An ideal first place to go is our central visitor center in front of the Dortmunder U, close to the main station. There you can find a bike rental station, a café and an accessible WC. Chargeable parking spaces are available in the Dortmunder U’s underground garage (address: Brinkhoffstraße 4, Dortmund). Emscherkunst_Camp, the special exhibition by students about the Emscherkunst can be found in the Dortmunder U’s first level.

Leonie Reygers-Terasse, Dortmund Public Transport: The visitor center is in front of the Dortmunder U at the Park der Partnerstädte, about 500m on foot from the Dortmunder main station.

The visitor center located at the farm yard Emscherquellhof (Emscher-spring-yard) in Holzwickede is an optimal starting point for tours going downstream along the art trail. Revierrad has bike stations at both the farm yard and also the train station Holzwickede, where you can comfortably rent bikes for your tour. The Emscherquellhof also houses a café, parking spaces and an accessible toilet. Moreover you can stay the night in the tent art work “Aus der Aufklärung” by Ai Weiwei.

Emscherquellhof, Quellenstraße 2, Holzwickede Public Transit: Take bus 438 from the train staion Holzwickede to the station „Emscherquelle“, then walk about 1km to Emscherquellhof. As an alternative, you can rent bikes at the Holzwickede bike rental station (Bahnhofstraße 4, Holzwickede).

Kokerei Hansa

Next to the industrial heritage site itself, the coking plant Kokerei Hansa has an information point Emscherkunst, and parking spaces and an accessible toilet. Revierrad also operates a bike rental station where you can borrow and give back bikes.

Emscherallee 11, Dortmund Public Transit: via U47 to station „Buschstraße“, then about 800m on foot

Museum Strom und Leben

The visitor center in the Museum Strom und Leben at the Recklinghausener Stadthafen is the ideal starting point for tours going upstream. Next to the museum itself, you can furthermore find a café, an accessible toilet and a bike rental station, where you can both borrow and give back bikes. In the street at the Stadthafen, some parking spaces can be found.

Uferstraße 2-4, 45663 Recklinghausen Public Transit: Bus SB 20 to the station „Hochlarmarkstraße“, then about 300m on foot.

Art trail and guide-system

The Emscherkunst 2016’s about 50km long art trail stretches between the cities of Holzwickede, Dortmund, Castrop-Rauxel, Recklinghausen and Herne. The art trail driven both ways: downstream from the Emscherspring in Holzwickede until the Stadthafen Recklinghausen, and similarly the other way round in upstream directed tours. Tours can be started and ended anywhere on the route.

The route was developed in close coordination with the ADFC Dortmund. The route guidance happens mostly on the regional and local cycle path system and is the connecting element between all art areas and the visitor centers. The guide-system’s signs are a distinctive orange with arrows and the Emscherkunst 2016-Logo. The can be found along the art trail on lanterns, sign posts, fence post and similar constructions. The artworks are signposted with information posts.

We recommend a two day tour if you’d like to bike the whole art trail and visit every artwork. The route is about 50km long and, due to only moderate inclines, suitable for unpracticed bikers.

Art and Bike Map

An extensive bike map came out at the exhibition’s start, simplifying navigation in the exhibition area and also offering a magnitude of background information about the Emscherkunst 2016’s artworks. The art and bike map is only available in German.
