Forest (for a thousand years…)

The audio work Forest (for a thousand years…) by Janet Cardiff und George Bures Miller introduced a special listening experience to visitors. Isolated from the hectic, noisy backdrop of city and traffic, visitors could listen to the tonal installation that resounds from more than thirty speakers high up in the trees.

Sounds from nature like animals, but also the intimate conversation between mother and child take listeners into a dreamlike sphere and kaleidoscopically open multiple scenes drawing in the visitor as if he was a part of the action. A sword fight, heavy breathing, singing – the audio composition lets everyone become author of a story unfolding in the head. Sometimes it gets difficult to distinguish between real noise and those ones that were recorded; with Forest (for a thousand years) Cardiff and Miller blur the edges between art and space.

The audio installation, which was shown for the first time at the dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel, was developed by Janet Cardiff together with her partner George Bures Miller. After the end of Emscherkunst 2016 the installation has been dismounted.
