For the time being, this is the last part of our series. Katja Aßmann, Artistic Director of the cooperation partner Urban Arts Ruhr, speaks about the opportunities developping from the Emscher conversion and the exhibition EMSCHERKUNST until 2020. She thinks that the continuation of the exhibition is a sustainable and exciting process which will always interpret the changes and the future in a new way. This part also includes video material from an artists visit in June 2011.

In the seventh part Dr. Simone Timmerhaus and Prof. Florian Matzner get a chance to speak about the main contents of the next EMSCHERKUNST exhibition. Like in 2010 it will be focused on the exchange with the visitors about the rearrangement of the New Emscher Valley. EMSCHERKUNST.2013 will deal with three main topics: art and ecology, participation of the visitors and, the last topic, art and architecture/ landscape architecure. Like the prior parts, this one is also rounded off with video material from the third artists visit in May 2011.

Eva Pfannes from Ooze Architects speaks about the piece of art „Between the Waters: The Emscher Community Garden“ which was created in cooperation with Marjetica Potrč in the frame of EMSCHERKUNST.2010 and will be reconstructed for the next exhibition. Visitors were strongly integrated by it and liked to stay there for a while. Moreover, new locations from the second artists visit in May 2011 are introduced in the video.

Fifth part of our EMSCHERKUNST series

Main topic of the fifth part of the EMSCHERKUNST-series is the piece of art “Warten auf den Fluss” (Waiting for the River) by the artist group Observatorium. Geert van der Camp and Andre Dekker speak about the special features of the bridge artwork, their participation in the last EMSCHERKUNST exhibition in 2010 and the future of the region. The video is topped off by recordings of the first artists visit in April 2011.

The region around the river Emscher is converted into a recreation area both by the EMSCHERKUNST and the Emscher Landscape Park. Dr. Eberhard Geisler from Regional Association Ruhr speaks on this subject. Prof. Ferdinand Ullrich, director of the museums of the City of Recklinghausen and professor at the Art Academy Münster states that the exhibition gives ideas to local residents and visitors to look at the region from a new and different perspective.

Last year the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 as well as the exhibition EMSCHERKUNST have opened new ways to draw a different picture of the region and encouraged thoughts on identity and change in the Ruhr area. In this sequence curator of the exhibition, Prof. Florian Matzner, and project manager, Dr. Simone Timmerhaus, speak about the mission and the understanding of EMSCHERKUNST.

Ingrid Rudolf of the Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Agriculture, Nature Conservation and Consumer Protection of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia in her interview refers to the Emscher conversion and to the positive effects by staging the region, especially the Emscher Island, through the exhibition EMSCHERKUNST.
Dr. Manfred Beck, city councillor of Gelsenkirchen, talks about the structural transformation of the region and of EMSCHERKUNST being a symbol for that.
